Government of Uganda designed the National ICT Initiatives Support Programme to facilitate the creation of an ICT Innovation ecosystem and marketplace for Ugandan innovative digital products

The growth of the ICT innovation ecosystem in Uganda has mainly been private sector led with minimal direct support from government. Novastar - school image
Novastar

We founded Novastar to join and fuel an entrepreneurial revolution that is transforming markets and sectors in Africa.

Together, we aim to create lasting value for the many, not just the few, for people and planet – for good.

Working from the vibrant centres of Lagos, London and Nairobi we partner with the bold entrepreneurs forging solutions to the continent’s biggest problems.

These are the companies that will become the truly valuable enterprises of the future.
We see in Africa an unmatched opportunity to reimagine industries in ways that signal a new, sustainable, inclusive development path for the world.

We aren’t interested in incremental solutions to marginal problems and inconveniences for the wealthiest 10% of the population.

The entrepreneurs we back, like us, are obsessed with serving the basic needs of everyday consumers; understanding their lifestyles, the friction that slows them down, the tools that lift them up, and the informal markets where they live, work and shop.

We don’t invest in lookalike business models. Plug-and-play tech solutions that address a single problem rarely work in a context where so many value chains are broken. While we learn from developed markets and adapt technology to power new solutions, our job is to understand the business models that work here.

We approach our work seeking to be generous in our relationships and generative in our actions. Our core values comprise our foundational beliefs and guide our daily decisions and behaviors.

As a small band with a bold vision, these values mirror those of the entrepreneurial teams who we partner with. We expect and invite all our stakeholders to hold us to them.

Twende - school image
Twende

Twende is a social enterprise dedicated to empowering local community members to improve their quality of life through the innovation and implementation of low-cost technologies. As an innovation center of Tanzanian students and instructors, Twende aims to merge local experience and technical knowledge into affordable innovations. Technologies built at Twende are affordable, comprised of locally available materials, and address a specific social need. Through school and community workshops, Twende supports aspiring entrepreneurs in the creation of their own solutions to community problems. Led by Tanzanian inventor Bernard Kiwia, Twende aims to be a beacon of social innovation and technological empowerment in Arusha, Tanzania and around the globe.

Very few technologies currently address the needs of rural Tanzanian communities. And those that do, often fail to substantially improve quality of life in villages for following reasons.
1. Rural technologies often are designed and manufactured abroad, leaving Tanzanian villagers unable to repair their devices, especially when materials are not locally available.
2. These technologies are not developed with a rich understanding of local needs and resources, often making them irrelevant or impractical. For example, technologies that require electricity are useless for most Tanzanian villagers who do not have access to or cannot afford electricity.
3. Most rural technologies are too expensive for the average villager. These problems have left an estimated 30 million villagers without access to technology to charge phones, see at night, and harvest their crops. Not only would these villagers stand to benefit from more productive technologies, but so would the Tanzanian economy as a whole.

Twende technologies address the aforementioned problems through the development of intermediate technologies that
1. utilize locally available materials,
2. are designed WITH rather than FOR village communities,
3. derive out of village needs and imperative,
4. are inexpensive and affordable for villagers,
5. are able to be repaired locally.

Twende is able to develop these technologies by engaging communities through community workshops and providing vital technical support and tools through its innovation center platform. Following the teachings of Amy Smith and her colleagues at MIT’s D-Lab, Twende has adopted a new model of community-based innovation called creative capacity building (CCB). Through technology workshops, Twende engages students and villagers in creating their own technologies to improve health and safety, save labor and time, and increase their incomes. Through an interactive, hands-on curriculum, people of all education levels are able to become active creators of technology, not just passive recipients.

A key component of the follow-up to the CCB training is a space where people can come together, apply what they have learned to design, and build technologies that can positively affect their lives. The Twende workshop ideally serves as this nexus of creativity, where aspiring inventors can learn about new technologies, develop their mechanics and design skills, prototype their ideas, create technology products, incubate micro-enterprises and obtain guidance on how to market the technologies that they create. Workshop tools are available to all participating community members and maintained through a small fee.

Then, you let her break out of her theory-based education and expose her to future trends and the power of building new things. You guide and train the student – but always focus on execution. As they build an identity as an entrepreneur and get started, you support them.

Creativity Lab - school image
Creativity Lab

Limited access to laboratory and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) tools in schools affects children's interest in STEM subjects as they graduate from the primary level to high school and university. Overtime, this can negatively impact the quality of innovations that would otherwise drive the increasing technological growth of our country and the ability of students to participate in the global STEM 'revolution.'

Thus, Creativity Lab exists to bridge that gap by offering an innovative approach to teaching STEM, providing educational resources and practical tools for students to build their skills in robotics, creative coding and engineering.

Primarily, Creativity Lab also works with schools to support teachers to incorporate STEM activities into the classroom and conduct after school STEM workshops for children. Computer science is a fast-moving field that brings together many disciplines, including mathematics, programming, engineering and linguistics. Our course provides you with a skill set that’s highly prized in industry and for academic research.

Computer Science is about understanding computer systems and networks at a deep level. Computers and the programs they run are among the most complex products ever created; designing and using them effectively presents immense challenges. Facing these challenges is the aim of Computer Science as a practical discipline, and this leads to some fundamental solutions.

Computer Science at UCT
Computer Science can be studied for four (Bsc degree). The fourth year allows the study of advanced topics and an in-depth research project. Everyone applies for the four-year course and chooses their exit point at the beginning of the third year.

The course concentrates on creating links between theory and practice. It covers a wide variety of software and hardware technologies and their applications. We are looking for students with a real flair for mathematics, which you will develop into skills that can be used both for applications such as scientific computing, and more importantly for reasoning rigorously about the specific behaviour of programs and computer systems. You will also gain practical problem-solving and program design skills; the majority of subjects within the course are linked with practical work in our well-equipped laboratory.

Careers
Our graduates’ knowledge and skills embody principles which will outlast today’s technology, making them highly sought after by industry and commerce alike. For example, companies at our annual recruitment fair collectively seek to recruit more than our entire annual number of graduates.

About half of our students go on to work in the computer industry, while a fifth pursue further study and careers in teaching and research.
